In Anticipation of Vidovdan, the Mayor Welcomed Athletes
The Mayor of Leskovac, Dr. Goran Cvetanović, hosted the traditional Vidovdan reception for 90 athletes from 40 clubs engaged in various individual sports.
„It is a pleasure to spend Vidovdan surrounded by athletes, active individuals, and children who, by winning medals and awards, promote the city of Leskovac in the best possible way,“ said Mayor Dr. Goran Cvetanović, extending his holiday greetings to the athletes.
„Each of you is special and has given your maximum effort to place Leskovac among the cities that have produced top athletes and sports professionals. Together, you represent the very best our city has to offer. Your achievements, dedication, and spirit are an inspiration to all of us. Success does not happen overnight. It is earned through hard work and training, through persistence and sacrifice, and by moving forward even when we fall and when times are toughest—because only those who believe more strongly in victory can become true winners. I wish you great success in your future competitions, and I assure you that the City of Leskovac will continue to be your most reliable support and driving force as you boldly pursue your championship goals,“ Cvetanović stated.
National team member and saber vice-champion Mihajlo Mladenović, a fencer from the “Dubočica” Fencing Club and a second-year student at the Faculty of Sport in Niš, addressed the audience on behalf of all athletes.
„I have been involved in fencing since 2014 and have achieved great results over the years. Among them, I am especially proud of winning second place in the individual saber category at the Senior National Championship in Belgrade, when my club ‘Dubočica’ became the national runner-up. I would like to take this opportunity to invite all young people to engage in sports, because that is where dreams become reality. I would also like to thank the city and Mayor Dr. Goran Cvetanović for the immense support and for recognizing the importance of sport.“
As in previous years, in 2025 the City of Leskovac allocated substantial funds—185 million dinars—for financing 107 sports clubs and organizations. Additional funds are designated for the functioning of the Dubočica Sports and Recreation Center, which increased from last year’s 147.1 million dinars to 168.6 million dinars. Furthermore, as part of the biannual awards for young talents, a significant number of young athletes receive prizes. On Saint Sava’s Day, 43 out of nearly 300 awards were given to athletes.
