Mile Ristović (Sponce, Medveđa, Leskovac, 1953), a poet and mathematician living and working in America, has managed through his work to unite the precision of science with lyrical inspiration, preserving the spirit of his homeland through poetry and carrying it with him around the world.
The title of his new poetry collection, “The Supreme Con Artist”, is powerful, provocative, and richly ironic—immediately capturing attention and arousing curiosity. In the Serbian context, the term “šibicar” (con artist or street hustler) evokes the image of a trickster who deceives onlookers through manipulation and sleight of hand—typically in a fast, elusive, and blatantly dishonest manner on the street. By adding the adjective “supreme”, the author elevates the meaning to the level of state leadership, alluding to those in power or systemic deceptions that, much like a street hustle, unfold before the public’s eyes while the truth is cleverly hidden.
The collection addresses socio-political themes in contemporary Serbia. The title itself is a meta-message: it reveals the tone, position, and critical stance of the author, while also inviting the reader to uncover the reality behind the “game.” At the same time, the title contains poetic irony—the word “supreme” gives the “con artist” an almost mythical status, amplifying the satirical effect.
In short: “The Supreme Con Artist” is a striking title that simultaneously criticizes, intrigues, and calls for reading—a true poetic slap in the face of hypocrisy.
